As a teacher navigating the fast-paced weekdays in Moscow, I understand how hard it can be to carve out time for a decent lunch. The whirlwind of classes, meetings, and grading often turns our precious break into a race against the clock. When I first arrived in Moscow in 2018, I had no clue where to go - and may have ended up in fast food chains a little more of then than I should have! With time, I learned my way around and today I want to share some of my lunch wisdom with you. This article is guaranteed to make you hungry so I hope your lunch break is not too far away :)
Luckily, Moscow is home to many quick and budget-friendly dining options that can refuel us in no time. Whether you’re craving a light snack or a hearty meal, there’s something for every taste. Let’s dive into my top five favorite lunch spots that cater to teachers on the go!
1. Grably - The Quick Fresh Fix

If you’re looking for a go-to spot for quick and inexpensive lunches, Grably is the place to be. This popular cafe chain serves a fantastic variety of fresh, healthy dishes that are perfect for a quick bite. You can choose from vibrant salads, delicious wraps, and wholesome grain bowls, all made with seasonal ingredients.
Grably takes pride in offering options for various dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free meals. This variety ensures that every teacher can enjoy something that suits their preferences. The casual atmosphere makes it an inviting spot to take a short break while savoring a comforting meal.
I usually go for the daily "business lunch" which doesn't provide a lot of choice but is very affordable with prices averaging around 300-400 RUB, depending on how hungry you are. If I have more time, or with friends in the evening, I will go for one of the fancier dishes and, if its a Friday, a drink or two (they serve alcohol).
2. Cafe Mumu - Comfort Food with a Fast Twist

Cafe Mumu is another gem that serves a variety of traditional Russian dishes, all at lightning speed. The concept is straightforward: pick your meal from the counter, pay, and you’re ready to go—perfect for teachers with constrained schedules.
Here, you can find hearty staples like borscht, beef stroganoff, and savory pies. Each offering reminds you of home-cooked comfort without the lengthy prep time. The lively environment, complemented by friendly staff, makes the experience enjoyable, even for those in a rush.
Prices at Cafe Mumu are about 250 RUB per dish. I often opt for the chicken Kyiv paired with creamy mashed potatoes—a filling and delightful meal that fills me up for a long afternoon of classes.
3. Kroshka Kartoshka - Because Who Doesn’t Love Potatoes?

If you’re a fan of potatoes, Kroshka Kartoshka is the ultimate destination! Specializing in all things potato, this eatery serves quick meals such as baked potatoes stuffed with diverse fillings, ranging from classic cheese and bacon to fresh vegetables.
For busy teachers, Kartoshka is the perfect place to satisfy cravings in under 15 minutes. A baked potato with sour cream and chives costs around 200 RUB, making it an affordable option. You can also pair your potato with soups or salads to create a more filling meal, ideal for keeping your energy up throughout the day.
The casual and fast-paced atmosphere is just right for those constantly on the go!
4. Food Courts - A Smorgasbord of Options

Food courts in Moscow play a significant role in offering quick lunch options. With a wealth of culinary choices, these vibrant hubs allow you to try a little bit of everything. If you're in the mood for sushi, shawarma, or a classic Russian dish, food courts are the answer!
These locations cater perfectly to the busy teacher who might crave something different every day. You can order quickly, eat, and get back to your responsibilities without delay. Plus, the lively atmosphere boosts your spirits during a hectic lunch break.
One of my best picks is a sushi roll paired with miso soup. This combination is quick, satisfying, and keeps me energized for afternoon classes. Typical meals at food courts range from 300 to 500 RUB, depending on your choices.
5. Street Kebabs - Delicious but Risky!

Finally, I can’t forget the street kebabs you can find throughout Moscow. These kebabs are often full of flavor, grilled to perfection, and surprisingly affordable—typically around 200 RUB each. However, a word of caution is necessary!
While street kebabs can be convenient and tasty, there’s a risk of foodborne illness if precautions aren’t taken. Many vendors lack strict hygiene practices, which should concern you. When I just arrived in Moscow I got a bout of the worst food poisoning and I am convinced it was from a street kebab stall. Needless to say, I am extremely hesitant to eat from them again!
If you decide to indulge, choose vendors with busy stalls—a higher customer turnover often means fresher ingredients. Personally, I do enjoy a meat kebab occasionally, but I make sure to stick to reputable vendors.
Wrapping Up the Best Lunch Spots
Finding lunch options in Moscow can be daunting, especially with our hectic schedules. Thankfully, the city offers a huge choice of quick and affordable meals that deliver on taste and quality. Whether you find yourself at Grably enjoying a fresh salad, savoring comfort food at Cafe Mumu, indulging in a potato dish at Kroshka Kartoshka, exploring the delightful options in food courts, or daring to try street kebabs, there’s something for everyone.
So, on your next lunch break, treat yourself to one of these places. A satisfying meal is essential to recharge and keep inspiring our students! Happy lunchtime hunting!
