5 Must-Visit Moscow Parks for Foreigners: My Personal Favorites and Insider Tips!

Updated: Apr 2

One of my favorite things about living in Moscow is how seamlessly it blends its energetic city life with lovely parks that provide a peaceful escape. For travelers, these green spaces offer a chance to recharge while enjoying the beauty of nature. Each park has its own vibe and attractions, which can enhance your visit to this dynamic city. Here are my top five parks in Moscow that you can’t miss, along with personal stories and tips to make the most of your experience.

1. Gorky Park

Gorky Park is perhaps the most iconic park in Moscow. It’s a vast area popular with both locals and tourists. Here, you’ll find lush greenery, winding paths, and unexpected pieces of art that add a quirky charm.

One of my favorite activities here is renting a bike. Rentals are budget-friendly, and biking allows you to cover more ground while appreciating the scenery. For refreshment, there are numerous cafes throughout the park where you can grab coffee or a light snack. Just last summer, I enjoyed a delicious smoothie while taking in the park's vibrant atmosphere.

Check the park’s calendar for events. In 2024 alone, Gorky Park hosted over 100 concerts and festivals, so there’s often something exciting happening.

2. Kolomenskiy

For those who appreciate history, Kolomenskiy park is a must-visit. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features ancient wooden churches, including the stunning Church of the Ascension, built in the 16th century.

Walking through Kolomenskiy feels like a journey through time. The combination of historical architecture and beautiful natural settings creates a special atmosphere. I recommend joining a guided tour. It costs around 600 rubles and provides fascinating insights into the park’s history.

If you love picnicking, you won’t be disappointed. There are plenty of green spaces where you can spread a blanket and enjoy a meal while taking in the stunning river views.

3. Sokolniki Park

Sokolniki Park is known for its lively atmosphere and various recreational options. It is one of Moscow's oldest parks and provides a mix of culture and energy. You can enjoy everything from art exhibitions to outdoor fitness classes here.

One memorable moment for me was stumbling upon the park’s skateboarding area. It was filled with local skaters showing off their talent. It's where I met my husband Anton on a warm summer afteroon. There are fun activities for all ages, like chess and mini-golf, which add to the park's charm.

Be sure to stop by the cozy cafes, especially in the evenings when live music often fills the air. The park’s buzz is contagious, and it’s a great place to mingle with locals.

4. Victory Park

Victory Park, dedicated to the memory of World War II, serves as both a park and a memorial. With its impressive Victory Monument and the Grand Hall of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, this park provides a meaningful backdrop for reflection.

Taking a stroll here can be especially rewarding in spring when flowers are in full bloom, creating a vibrant display. I found the park particularly moving during the Victory Day celebrations in May, when hundreds of people gather to honor the occasion.

Make sure to explore the WWII Museum located within the park. It offers in-depth exhibits, and it’s a perfect chance to learn more about the history behind the significant landmarks. Can you spot Hitler's hat among the more random items?

5. Tsaritsino

Last but not least is Tsaritsino Park, where you can explore both nature and history. The park is breathtaking, featuring lakes, gardens, and impressive architectural buildings, including the iconic Tsaritsino Palace.

As I wandered through the park, I felt like I was in a storybook. The pathways are framed by beautiful trees and vibrant flowers. There are also several cafes where you can enjoy traditional Russian dishes while taking in the lovely scenery.

It was here on a beautiful summer day that Anton proposed to me so this park will always hold a special place in my heart. Plenty of weddings seem to take place here and look out for outdoor concerts and cultural events too. These offer a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in local traditions and meet friendly Muscovites.
